Garden Party

I have a large lilac tree in my backyard. I love that tree. I love lilacs in general, and have tried to grow them before, but the house we lived in had a drainage issue in the backyard and the trees I planted always died. This house had one when we moved in. The flowers are a deep warm violet and smell heavenly. I look forward to it blooming every year.

I started this painting the same time as the other small one I posted a couple weeks back. Because they were being worked on in tandem, it has a very similar colour palette. When I first mixed the magenta I was trying to use up with the blue I was using, the colour was so reminescent of the lilacs on my tree that I could practically smell them.

This painting brings to mind that feeling of sitting in the grass under the shade of that tree, the sun peaking through windows in the branches, the scent of lilacs wafting down from above. It is blue skies and sunshine, dense summer foliage and flowers. I'm looking out the window and seeing the new growth breaking through the bare soil, and I know the next couple months are going to be amazing.
