This painting was created after a month long artist residency in Portugal. I had spent most of the month in the Algarve, then took the train into Lisbon for some sightseeing before I headed back to Canada. One of the unique features of Lisbon is the ancient aqueduct that runs through the city. This region is mountainous, and when the train rounds the bend and the aqueduct comes into view, it is an amazing sight. I used the arched shapes to represent the aqueduct, and the verticals are reminiscent of the hills and tall buildings.
